Myth 2 Multi-Player
Bungie.net is a great place to find a good time if you
don't mind being blown to smithereens. Playing co-op (cooperatively with others) or
against other players develops your gaming skills and allows you to experiment with
strategy and different units to complete a map or objective. All of the maps are
"games" such as Steal the Bacon and King of the Hill. Other maps are more
sinister like Body Count and Assassin. You will have a favorite map. Almost everyone
does. Some maps lend themselves to strategy and others hinder it. Maps such as Drowned
Kingdom for example, are difficult for dwarfs due to the amount of water areas the
map has. Water areas also hinder other units and therefore become a great strategic tool.
What will be presented here are the various parts of the multi-player experience.
The first thing you have to do to play Myth 2 on-line is to register your account with Bungie.net. You can do this by directing your browser to http://www.bungie.net and then filling out the new account information. The most important thing you need when you register is the Bungie.net serial number. This number can be found on the inside of your Myth 2 CD case on the back of the paper insert located in the lid. Do not lose this number as it is the only way that Bungie.net knows you. Also do not post a request to alt.games.myth asking for serial numbers. This just says that you either stole the CD or burned an illegal or pirated copy. Do not ever, under any circumstances, give your Bungie.net account number to anyone!!!
Select a login name and be creative. It would be kind of boring to go online as "Bob". "Butcher Bob" is better hehe. If someone is already using the login name you selected, you will be prompted to select another. Once you have found a name and password, Bungie will email you with a confirmation email. In my experience with on-line gaming, Ive found that its very convenient to have a dedicated email address for the game you are playing. You will meet many people and you may want to communicate with them outside of the gaming community to set up game times, discuss strategy or whatever. Hotmail, Juno, and Yahoo are just a few of the places where you can get a free email address for life.
When you are ready to play a multi-player game, just select the multi-player option from the Myth 2 menu screen and the Multi-player Setup screen will appear. This screen allows you to select your player name (whatever you want to be known as) and your team name should a game you play designate you to a team and make you Captain. On the right side of the Setup screen, you will see your login and password area. Make sure you enter your login name and password just as Bungie will recognize them. Make sure you place an "X" on the box to remember your password. When you change your icon, colors or name, be sure to mark the box to update your Bungie.net appearance. Otherwise it will use the last character and color scheme you logged on with. Once you have finished, press the Login button. You will then be connected to the Bungie.net server.
Once online, you will be in a "room" with other players. You can either join or create a game from the room you are in, or you can join play from any other room you choose. To choose another room, locate the bar in the upper left of your screen. Left click and hold to display a list of other rooms. To move to another room, simply bring your mouse down to the room you desire and highlight it. You will then go to that room provided it isnt full. Full rooms are denoted by numbers in red indicating a large population. The top number is the amount of players in a room while the bottom number is the number of games occuring in that room. Before joining any game, I recommend chatting with some other players first to kind of get a feel for who you might want to play with. Its no fun to play with others when they don't play fair or annilate you in the first minute of a 10 minute game. Try to find other players with similar goals. If you are just learning to play a particular map, ask around for help with it. You may find others willing to guide you. Stay away from the ranked rooms unless you are seeking to be a ranked player. Ranked players have scores and values attached to their names from all of the ranked games that they play. If you play against a ranked player in a ranked game, that person will only be out to defeat you. The rank players or "rankwhores" do not share the same love of the game that the unranked players do. Their only purpose on Bungie.net is to move up in rank. They do this by defeating newbie players, playing against each other, cheating etc. To learn more about ranked games, consult your Myth 2 instruction book.
Game Options
There are several different types of games to play on Bungie.net and what will be presented here is a description of each.
Body Count -- My personal favorite. The goal of the game is simple: Inflict as much damage to other players as possible. This is probably the most widely played game on Bnet.
Assassin -- (From the M2 handbook) Each team has a target unit, or units who has a double thick yellow border when they are selected (on most levels, the target character is the Baron). The object of the game is to assassinate your opponent's targets before he does the same to you. If your target is killed at any time in the game, you are eliminated from the game and your troops will disappear. Similarly, if you eliminate an opponent's target, they will be eliminated and all of their troops will disappear. The winner is the person who eliminates the most enemy targets. In case of a tie, the winner is whoever eliminated an enemy target earliest in the game. There is a variation of the Assassin game known as "Choke the Chicken". This game is identical to a normal game of Assassin except that your targets are uncontrollable chickens. This is probably the most difficult variation to play since the chickens take so little damage to kill and the fact that you cannot control them.
Balls on Parade -- Each team has a ball in their possession. The objective is to capture as many of your opponents balls as possible. When the game ends, the player with the most balls wins.
Captures -- A number of balls are present on the battlefield. The winner of the game is the player who owns the most balls. This is a fun game since the balls can be moved to areas within the map that can be defended. Playing keep away is another option too hehe. Beware of this game when its being played on the "Killing Grounds" map. Oftentimes someone will cheat by putting the ball into the moat making it extremely difficult to get it out. This is also known as cheating. If you cant play fair on Bnet, dont even get online.
Flag Rally -- There are up to nine flags on the battlefield. The winner is the first player to capture all of them. It is not necessary to defend a flag after it has been captured. Touch it and move on to the next flag.
Hunting -- Each player or team tries to kill the most wildlife. All animals have a point value attached to them and the player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
Last Man on the Hill-- One area of the map is designated as the hill with a flag marker. The hill becomes captured when you or another player moves one or more of your units within a certain range of the flag and no enemy units are within range. The winner is the last player in control of the hill, regardless of how long they have possessed it. Another players units already have the flag? Fight it out!
Scavenger Hunt -- A number of balls are scatterred around the map, and the first player to own all five balls wins. Remember, you can move the balls around the map to make it harder for your opponent to possess them.
Stampede! -- (from the M2 manual) Each team starts with a herd of animals (usually pigs) and a number of flags. The object of the game is to shepherd your herd to the enemy flags. When they are within contesting range of an enemy flag, they will be teleported to safety and your team will gain a point for each teleported animal. The winner is the team with the most points at the end of the game. If neither team succeeds in teleporting their herd to safety, the winner is the team with the greatest number of surviving herd beasts.
King of the Hill -- Similar to Last man on the Hill, winners of King of the Hill are determined through total time of possession of the flag. If you had possession of the flag for the longest time overall, you are the winner.
Steal the Bacon -- Somewhere on the battlefield is a ball which assumes the color of the last team that touched it. The object is to snatch the ball and keep it away from your opponents. The last team to own the ball is the winner. The game will switch to sudden death overtime if the ball is contested when time runs out.
Territories -- There are several flags on the map. The object is to capture and hold more flags than your opponents. Unlike Flag Rally, you may need to leave troops behind at each flag to guard it. The game will switch to sudden death overtime if a flag is contested when the time runs out. The winner is the team in control of the most flags at the end of the game.
Game Chat and Playing
When you are in the game setup screen with the other players, now is the time to discuss teams (if any) or ask specific questions regarding the map you are playing. It is perfectly ok to ask the host (first player in the list) to change certain aspects of the game if you would like something different. You may want a longer planning time, game time, no teams or maybe even a different map. If the host doesn't want to change the options of the map, you might want to consider leaving that particular game since it is apparent that this person would rather make sure they get what they want rather than foster a good game. Flexibility is the key. If you ask for a different map and the host tells you that they will change the map on the next game, then that is normal. Have fun with the map and try to learn as much as you can.
In the last few seconds before the game actually begins (usually during the last few seconds of the preparation time) you may see the letters "GLA" or "GL" These are acronyms for Good Luck All and Good Luck. Its always in the spirit of good sportsmanship to wish other players good luck even though you are already planning your first devastating blow to their forces. To broadcast your good wishes, simply press the "Y" key and type your message. Hit enter to send.
When the game is over, its customary to type or "yell" the acronym "gg" or "gga". GG and GGA are good game and good game all. Even if you lose horribly, you will be better thought of if you announce that it was a good game. Poor sports and whinybabies have no place on Bnet. As mentioned before, you will lose many games early on. If you win, don't gloat. You will only look like an ass and no one will want to play with you. If you lose horribly, dont leave the game. Hang out and watch the others play. You will learn much from players that have more experience than you. If you are combined with another player on a team, your communications (using the "Y" key) are private to your teammate. Make sure you let them know when you spot enemy formations and offer your troops to aid them. If you are team Captain, you have the ability to assign units to your teammate. Be generous and fair. No one wants to get stuck with nothing but Thrall...unless they ask for them specifically of course. If the other player is the Captain and they are less than fair with giving you troops, play the game with what you have and make the best of it. When the game is over, you may want to consider finding another person to game with since team play requires cooperation.
One of the most annoying things you can do as a player is to "Camp". Camping is considered cheating and unfair by most Myth 2 players. When you are camping, you are keeping your troops way out of harms way and not getting involved in the fighting until the last minute. Now, dont confuse strategy with camping. In the game Last Man on the Hill for instance, you kind of want to hang back until the game is almost over so that everyone gets an equal chance at winning the game. Ive played many games where Ive watched other players hide their units to avoid being discovered so that they could win the game by overwhelming the now weaker forces with their perfectly healed units. When you see this, announce to the other players what this player is doing. This puts the pressure on the lamer (aka Lemur) to modify his behavior so that he can play with some honor.
